Polka Dots, Redrawn
Summer ’26 has seen a massive return for the polka dots all around the globe. From luxury runways to everyday capsule wardrobes, the print has reclaimed its place in fashion. Little do they know that beneath all the folded linens and the ironed cottons in my closet, there lies a denim shacket with oversized polka dots that I absolutely refuse to take out for the season. Don’t get me wrong; by the looks of it, it’s a decent shirt! But if you’re trying to blend with the trend, you might have a little bit of a hard time.
Before I explain myself, let’s rewind a bit and look at the history. The spotted print earned its name from the polka craze during the 1840s, being one of the many creations to be named after the lively Bohemian Polka Dance which spread rapidly across Europe and North America. Since then, the pattern has come a long way, from overcoming the negative associations of spotted skin with diseases, to enjoying its own golden era in the 1950s. It goes without saying that the print has gone through multiple evolutions and has made its way back with full force this summer.
The return of the polka dots this year is less about from association with vintage or retro nostalgia, and more about them having a distinct identity, blended with contrast and unconventionality in a way that looks more current. The season reimagines polka dots through cleaner silhouettes, monochromes, or warm/pastel neutrals in a contemporary fashion without becoming overwhelming or predictable. This contrast helps to introduce a hint of maximalism into the minimalistic wardrobes, playfulness to the clean girl, and confidence to the chic attire.

The black and white prints are leading the movement, bringing out a clear, graphic contrast that is easy to wear and makes styling effortless. Pairing them with colours such as navy, chocolate and soft pastels shifts the mood into lighter, more relaxed undertones. Mixed scales and uneven pacing embrace imperfection and eccentricity in a way that feels novel and timeless at the same time. Midi dresses, fitted tops, capris and even footwear are some of the wardrobe staples of the trend.

This beautiful experimentation and evolution of the dots prove that while we're still in an era dominated by minimalism and clean looks, hints of maximalism have started resurfacing in the form of contrasts and confident patterns, and are even rising to the mainstream. Dressing is slowly moving into more expressive structures, and polka dots form a huge part of the shift. And while I can’t speak for everyone, I can absolutely picture myself wearing a black midi dress with little white polka dots, dancing around to the song So Easy to Fall in Love by Olivia Dean.
