Another Year, Another Cannes
With stunning ball gowns, dapper suits, and elegant outfits, Cannes never disappoints. However, this year’s carpet stands out more than just a bit though, because of the new outfit restrictions. To any Cannes newbies, new rules have been placed on what outfits can be worn on the red carpet, barring nudity and outfits which are judged to be overly voluminous. Not only are these restrictions limiting the designers and models, but they were sent out only a day before the festival, a horrific and thoughtless faux-pas considering that the outfits had already been chosen and prepared. While the restrictions make sense logically, seeing as it is a festival meant to highlight the movies being shown rather than the amazing outfits, it is definitely a sharp change from past years. However, despite the confusion and difficulties, the outfits from this year's festival did not not disappoint. As Cannes had hoped, the outfits were less bright this year with many turning to muted shades or fully neutral colors, along with 81.4% of women attending wearing maxi dresses. Nearly half of the women in attendance wore sheath dresses rather than the now banned, formerly popular sheer dresses.
Some devoted Cannes viewers will note that despite new rules, some of our faves, such as Charli XCX and Dakota Johnson, sported super cute semi-sheer dresses that we can’t help but love. Another popular red carpet star whose style we can’t help but obsess over is Bella Hadid, who made waves in a risky black maxi dress which non-graphically defied the new nudity restrictions through an asymmetrical back, open sides, and a slit up to the hip, as well as huge emerald earrings and a sparkling heart-shaped diamond ring, all paired with the debut of her newly blonde hair. Fans will attest that this look was not her only stunner, as she shone throughout the festival in a beautiful all-white arrival outfit, complete with a Dolce & Gabbana bustier top and a pair of jeans that fully bring back the straight-leg pants look. Her styling throughout the festival was nothing short of masterful with amazing hair, accessories, and jewelry. These examples show every fashion buff how this year’s Cannes has gone above and beyond in its red carpet game, though many may disagree on if that is due to or despite these new rules.
