Crochet Fashion: Why Is Everyone Still So Obsessed With It?

From tops and skirts to bags and hats, crochet has come a long way in redefining fashion trends and their impact on the fashion industry.

It's now seen as a “flex” to know how to crochet as a hobby, with many teens and young adults recently starting up their own crochet businesses!

But how did this come to be? And was it always the case? Why is crochet still in demand, and how has it managed to stay that way?

Are you interested in tuning into this fun, affordable trend? Then stay till the end to read the beginner-friendly guide on how to single crochet (assuming one knows how to make a slip knot)!

Accessible & Customizable

One of its most competitive advantages in the market is that crocheting is very accessible. It's an activity that can be easily learned and carried out by most. There are YouTube videos, blogs and online platforms that specialise in teaching the skill, even from scratch!

To say the least, crocheting can be picked up on any other day. And, with enough effort, one can easily become adept in it in a short time period.

With that comes the fun part: creating clothing and accessories from scratch also makes them customizable to one's needs and preferences. No need to ship back due to tight or loose fitting. Gone is the waiting time for a new size to arrive.

Say goodbye to having to wait for your clothing at all! It's all in your home and at your convenience when you know how to crochet.

During the pandemic, many shops and stores closed or shut down, causing many people to start looking to solve their problems through self-sufficient means. That's how crochet became more widespread. Knitting was more common to most at the time; however, crochet quickly became the better alternative. Its beginner-friendly and versatile technique was what made it stand out and slowly, but surely, become a prevalent trend in fashion today!

Eco-friendly & Sustainable

Knowing how to crochet saves your money as well as the environment.

Millennials and Gen Z are becoming more conscious about reducing their carbon footprint by consuming less, thus wasting less. When including crochet in your personal style (and lifestyle), you make a better choice not only for yourself but for your cat, your garden, and your annoying neighbour upstairs (yes, they matter, too!).

Remember:

less consumption = less waste,

less waste = less pollution,

less pollution = better living conditions,

better living conditions = goodbye 9-5 jobs! 🤧

(half) Kidding on the last one, but on a serious note…

The choices we make every day have a ripple effect on all life around us. And frankly, it is heartwarming to see my generation redirecting its impact on the planet by making better, conscious choices such as this one. So why not choose to spend time learning a skill that'll benefit you, me and the rest of the planet? Believe me, your contribution matters… more than you think.

Visual Appeal & Affordability

You can look breathtaking and at a reasonable cost?! Yes, bae, crocheting in fashion is an affordable AND eye-pleasing trend. Coupled with the fact that it's easily customizable, it's no wonder it's still all the rage and present on the runway to date. All one needs is the crochet pattern, and off they go creating their work of art.

I don't know about you, but that's strike three in my books. Imma go get my yarn and hook from the store (truth be told, this author doesn't know how to crochet… yet!)

Closing Message

There you have it. These are a few of the reasons why crochet is still in the market - why you probably have a friend who knows a friend who knows someone who owns a crochet business.

These are reasons why it will probably remain so for a long time. It's not going anywhere. As long as such eye-catching, DIY-able silhouettes exist, there will always be a demand.

Personally, I love how crocheting allows for personal expression and promotes ways to entertain one's creativity.

In a single week in August, the trend in crochet fashion jumped from 63 to 84 on Google Trends. That's a 33% increase!

The trend is here to stay, but so are we!

So get on board as we learn this skill together (literally! I need to tune into this as well) - keeping fashion very mindful whilst making it super fun as well, I couldn't have asked for anything better, could you?

Now, as promised, a beginner-friendly guide on the single crochet stitch :)

Start with a chain:

Most patterns begin with a foundation chain, which is a series of connected chain stitches (the slip knot).

  1. Perform the stitch:

For each stitch, follow these steps:

  • Insert your hook into the designated stitch or space.

  • Yarn over.

  • Pull the yarn through the stitch, creating a new loop on your hook.

  • Yarn over again.

  • Pull through the required number of loops on your hook to complete the stitch.
