The Hot New Fashion Trend: Skinny

Fans Are Worried: These Celebs Are Getting TOO Thin

The body has always existed as a fashion trend, whether we like it or not. Women are meant to change and form their bodies into whatever is most popular. In the 1950s, it was more of a curvy body type similar to Marilyn Monroe’s,  while in the 1960s super skinny was in, reminiscent of Twiggy’s.

As well as this, body type has always coincided with fashion trends, the “perfect body” is needed to make the popular clothes look good. So with the resurgence of 2000s fashion trends also comes the return of 2000s “heroin-chic” skinny.

This first arrived with the rejection of high-waisted clothing. Low waisted flared and baggy pants became most popular, and wearing them high waisted made you a fashion pariah. Popular shirts also changed, baggy and “business casual” was ditched for tiny crop tops.

As gen z became young adults, the fashion torch was handed to them. The previous trends seemed outdated and having the stomach out quickly became a fashion trend. A flat stomach was perceived to look better with these tiny clothes, effectively returning to the toxicity of the 2000s, an era where famous women beyond a size 4 were ripped to shreds for their natural bodies.

And for the most part this same toxicity didn’t exist in the 2020s. In response to the body positivity movement skinny was still encouraged, but the severity present in the 2000s didn’t exist. A sort of “slim-thick” (tiny waist, large thighs and butt) body type was still encouraged.

Though this changed with the ozempic craze. This new “magical weight loss drug” made skinny more attainable, but due to the high price point, only to the rich and powerful. As consumers we've slowly watched as the celebrities once preaching body positivity have gotten smaller and smaller. Not only that but many celebrities are getting to a size seemingly unattainable. The anorexic skinny is coming back in, and because of the current fashion trends the hottest clothing trends are showing off these tiny bodies.

The unattainable has returned, causing eating disorders to rise. Body positivity isn’t preached in the same way and we are encouraged to mold ourselves into perfect tiny bodies. This should not be the case. There isn’t a certain weight you have to be to dress well, only confidence and a love for your own style.
