The Collapse of the Day- Night Divide
Good morning readers! Or should I say, good night? With modern style phenomena who is to say? For decades, as daywear and casual fashion has developed, so has evening wear right alongside it. Whether it was the capris and full- skirted gowns of the 50s, or the padded shoulders and satin nightgowns of the 80s, these trends have always progressed hand in hand. Yet, none have merged quite as much as the cultural currents of the past decade.
During the 2015 Gucci Fall 2015 Ready- To- Wear show, Alessandro Michele kickstarted his debut, shifting fashion away from sleek minimalism. The collection featured ultra- sheer tops and lace (Figure 1), marking a turning point in the decade’s fashion landscape.

By exposing the traditionally privately worn garments, Michele challenged the conservative assumptions on where certain clothes belonged. Riccardo Tisci’s evocative collection in the 2016 Fall Givenchy show was reminiscent of this rebellion. The Egyptian inspired pieces incorporated silky suiting and lacy lingerie motivated dresses. In addition, the richly colored textures were reminiscent of those used in satin slips and other nightwear. While the pieces themselves were bold and striking, it was the rebellious message they presented that took aback the audience.
In 2019, the second wave of this fusion came in the form of a global pandemic. As the COVID- 19 pandemic confined millions to their homes, the line between private and public lives began to blur. Around the same time, Vera Wang’s 2020 Spring collection showcased countless lingerie elements and intimate- inspired structures that were woven into a tapestry of loose- fitting bodices, embracing the sense of comfort. Notably, 43.32% of the pieces incorporated the sheer lace in some type of way , showing that nightwear had become not just a bold addition to day fashion, but a modern wardrobe staple in its own right.

If Vera Wang’s Spring 2020 collection normalized dressing, Miu Miu’s Spring 2022 collection pushed the trend to its logical extreme. Featuring exposed undergarments, ultra-low waists, intentionally unfinished seams, and frayed edges, Miuccia Prada’s 2022 designs have a prominent theme of no regard for traditional garment roles.
The third and final wave was initiated by the Fendi 2026 Spring/ Summer collection. With numerous satin elements as well as flowy low- tiered dresses, Silvia artfully constructed pieces that emanate comfortable luxury without constricting structure. Though the patterns of the dresses elevated the garments, their silhouettes resembled those of vintage nightingowns and house dresses. However, the public received this particular lineup in an unusual way. Instead of being seen as provocative, the Fendi collection was perceived as a unique elevation of current trends.

By the mid-2020s, the separation between daywear and nightwear had become increasingly difficult to define. Silk slip dresses could be worn to daily outings, matching knit sets had appeared in offices, and corsetry and lingerie-inspired garments have become commonplace in everyday wardrobes.
This collapse reflects more than just a changing of trends. It mirrors the way that instead of focusing on outward image and a desire to fit in, fashion has shifted to become centered around versatility, comfortability, and self- expression. This can be partially credited to the changing styles and cultural changes, but much of it is due to the fervor and audacity of recent generations. Many people know the phrase “Curiosity killed the cat,” yet its lesser-known ending—“but satisfaction brought it back”—may better capture the spirit of modern fashion.
What began as the curiosity of designers has evolved into a cultural movement. As the younger population continues consistently questioning dress codes and pushing back on the societal restraints of visual identity, fashion has responded in kind. So much so, that the cultural landscape of the past decade has been a collage of personal styles and self- presentation.
