You are what you wear

What you wear is the biggest window into your soul. It allows people to see who you are without you ever exchanging a word. From your favorite shirt to the pair of socks you’re rocking, everything you put on your body is the outer expression of your character.

The fashion industry has evolved into one of the few spaces that exists outside of a gendered sphere. In its own bubble of expression, fashion goes beyond the binaries of gender, seamlessly blending them together into the ultimate form of self-expression.

Just imagine, even for a second, the fashion industry of the 1950s, or even just a few decades ago. It was absolutely unheard of for women to wear pants, and on the flip side, for men to go out in skirts. On the rare occurrence that this would happen, they would be most definitely ridiculed for using clothes to express themselves. It wasn’t an option at the time.

With the evolution of feminism and LGBTQIA+ movements came the reconstruction of the fashion industry as a whole. Just like people don’t fit into strict binaries of identity, fashion doesn’t either. Clothes no longer follow the strict dresscode of the past. Your attire has become more about what really matters: wearing what makes you feel the most comfortable.

People are free to experiment with their wardrobes, finding a style that feels right for them. No longer restricted in what you can wear, a person’s personal style can really shine through. Clothing has become more about what actually fits your silhouette and the colors that you like to wear, instead of what is deemed correct in accordance with binary codes.

Retailers have moved to using terms such as ‘unisex’ when describing attire, instead of the categories of  ‘men’ and ‘women’. Today, most people combine the two strict categories of the past to create an outfit that is entirely themselves. From the runway to walking down the street, you can see people layering skirts on top of jeans or using a tie to complete their look, taking pieces from all categories to showcase their whole identity. That is what truly makes fashion the best way to show off your personality.

With all this in mind, make sure that whatever you are wearing reflects the most authentic version of yourself, because why should you try to be anyone else?
