AI is ruining fashion’s creativity.

Artificial Intelligence is taking over our world in every single aspect. Instead of stressing focus on the beauty of art, the ease of generating something has become a priority. Artistic professionals need not be paid because generating something similar is both cheaper and quicker. But the beauty of art is how truly human it is, stories and personalities are always very evident in what they create. Art created by artificial intelligence feels empty, it’s simply a mash of multiple different art pieces that ultimately ends up as something with no real soul behind it.

And this of course becomes immensely relevant when in discussion of the fashion industry itself. Though many perceive fashion as being simply about practicality, it is so much more than that. Fashion at its core is an art form, not only serving as a method for self expression but creating something particularly visually appealing for the consumer. This of course exists in more high fashion aspects but in ready to wear as well. Clothes often represent the world around us; we follow trends that are indicative of spirit and attitude of time. For example throughout history we have seen that as the economy worsens, the wearing of heels increases and skirt length decreases. And there’s something very particularly human about that, we are products of our environment and our clothing properly represents our true selves.

So at the point in which we try to ask AI to replicate these human attributes in fashion it becomes impossible. It simply pumps out more soulless slop, there’s no story there, no culture. It also adds a layer of surrealism to the fashion industry, making items that simply cannot exist. However, so much of the beauty of the industry is creation of these extravagant amazing garments, only existing as pictures removes valuable creativity.

These AI images are everywhere and completely saturating the industry, most centrally in fast fashion. They are able to pump out these images in hundreds, placing them on websites like Shein before the item even exists. And of course many fall for this, becoming excited by the surreal aspect of the item, only to receive an item in the mail that looks completely different.

At its core, the biggest problem with this epidemic is that it’s taking away jobs in the industry that are already extremely scarce. Sketching and designing is such a big part of what makes these items beautiful, the human behind it is what makes these garments true art pieces. This problem is only going to get worse as AI becomes more advanced and realistic, so we need to work to actively combat this problem, to demonstrate fashion as the art it truly is.
