THE Y2K Pop Icons

Who doesn’t love a time machine back into the 2000s? Popstars like Britney Spears, Rihanna,  and Christina Aguilera have been known to rock the iconic Y2K look that has been making everyone’s jaw drop since that decade. For months now, while scouring the internet for the newest fashion inspiration, it has all been circling back to the 2000s. I mean, the low-rise jeans and crop top combo, or the chunky statement jewelry that never fails to catch the eyes of everyone within a mile radius, isn’t it so recognisable? And you can’t mention Y2K fashion without bringing up the most notable piece of all, the statement tracksuit. However, most of these looks concern the day-to-day outfits of the 2000s icons, but my personal favorites are seen when these divas get to shine during their performances, and especially their red carpet looks.

Rihanna really knew how to rock the Y2K look. Covered in staples from the time, she is seen sporting baggy, low-waisted jeans with a beautifully sequined purple crop top and hoop earrings. She knew how to mix the everyday look with more dressed-up attire to really make her outfits stand out.

Whenever someone mentions Y2K, my first thought goes to the queen herself, Britney Spears. Definitely one of the most notable stars of the decade, Britney Spears knew how to break the barriers of Y2K fashion, and make it her own. In this image, you can see her wearing a dress made entirely out of denim and keeping up the sparkle with a huge statement necklace.  She paired the fit with Justin Timberlake, who was wearing the matching suit. These matching outfits were the talk of the town after the event, making it one of her more notable looks.

Even though I can’t share all of Cristina Aguilera's best Y2K outfits, it can very easily be seen that she is the embodiment of the decade's fashion. From her highlighted and crimped hair to her bedazzled bodysuit, she is a true icon of the decade. Her outfits are timeless masterpieces that can be used as inspiration to blend right into the era. Just take a look outside, and I’m sure you can find someone rocking the 2000s fashion, and find a picture of her wearing something very similar.

Saving the best for last, Britney Spears knew how to shock a crowd when performing. On stage, she can be seen in a glimmering green bra top with a pair of butterfly-patterned shorts, while holding a snake for the 2001 MTV Music Awards. Her choice of outfit showcases her remarkable ability to add her own bit of “realism” to her looks, even if it includes the addition of a living snake around her neck.

With fashion trends coming back to the sphere of Y2K, I think it’s important to remember the icons who gave us these looks to follow in the first place. We would have no timeless pieces or gorgeous outfits to recreate if these pop stars hadn’t showcased them before us. Keep this in mind as you rock your next pair of low-rise denim or even a baby tee, as these are the founders of those fashion staples.
