A trend’s power often comes from scarcity, the sense that it’s fresh, exciting, and worth seeking out. But when everyone is doing it at once, that magic fades. As soon as a look, dance or idea becomes ubiquitous, it stops feeling unique and begins to feel ordinary, or even “basic.”

When something spreads because it’s ironic or viral, it often lacks the emotional or narrative weight that helps trends stick.

This is compounded by ironic consumerism, a phenomenon where people participate in trends both to mock them and to be part of them, collapsing sincerity into spectacle. That kind of participation accelerates cycles because the engagement is shallow, not meaningful.

But platforms prioritize what’s next, not what lasts, meaning that trends have to constantly reinvent themselves or disappear into the digital background.
