Vogue World: Hollywood and the Art of a Good Costume
The Fashion Stock Market here, your one and only source into the hottest style trends and fashion events. A few weeks ago, Vogue hosted their annual Vogue World event, an open-air fashion show that includes a runway show, philanthropic event, and concert. Each year, the lavish gathering is hosted in a different city and has a different theme, this year’s theme being Hollywood. The opulent occasion celebrated the relationship between film and fashion (two of my favorite things, by the way). Top models strutted down the catwalk wearing costumes from some of Hollywood’s most iconic films, with new ensembles inspired by the movies making appearances as well. Some of these designers included Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, and Balmain, and their clothing was sported by models like Alex Consani, Kendall Jenner, Yasmin Wijnaldum, and Gabriette. They served not just looks, but performances and the drama that can only be expressed through fashion.
It’s like playing dress-up, but more refined and adult
Halloween came early this year, with each costume telling the story of how fashion and film intermingle to create a visual experience for the viewer. Think of the two like peanut butter and jelly: they can exist alone, but oh, how great they are when they come together! It’s like playing dress-up, but more refined and adult (yet still very similar to the runway shows I did with my sisters and our Disney princess dresses). What better stage to put on this extravagant show than Paramount Pictures Studios Lot, the birthplace of so many famous films it should be elected the 8th Wonder of the World. Unlike other years, the inclusion of well-known actors in the show drew a lot of attention from those on the cinephile side of the spectrum, allowing the event to reach a wider audience. There were also electric performances from Doja Cat and Gracie Abrams to add to the full sensational experience.
These costume artists are masters of their trade, creating looks that stick with viewers far after they leave the movie theatre (in fact, their work is often recreated for costume parties and Halloween trick-or-treating)
Now, let’s get into which films were featured, and whose work was highlighted on the one-night-only celebration. These costume artists are masters of their trade, creating looks that stick with viewers far after they leave the movie theatre (in fact, their work is often recreated for costume parties and Halloween trick-or-treating). Colleen Atwood (Edward Scissorhands), Jacqueline West (Dune), Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge), Milena Canonero (Marie Antoinette), and Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther) are just a few of the professionals who got their flowers. The event gave credit to all the hard work that goes on behind-the-scenes, and opened people’s eyes to how crucial a good costume is. I mean, without the excellent costuming in The Great Gatsby, how would the audience feel the uppity elegance of the Roaring Twenties? And who would bother watching Marie Antoinette (sorry, Sofia Coppola) if it weren’t for the excellently executed Rococo gowns? I mean, it’s simply divine, and accounting for historical accuracy takes someone with beauty and brains to accomplish successfully.
Vogue World: Hollywood affirmed how fashion makes a statement in various aspects of our culture and society, and we love that!
The event’s proceeds will go to the Entertainment Community, a charity that supports actors, workers, and others involved in the film industry. Considering the event’s focus, the philanthropic efforts will be focused on costume professionals. So we can clearly see that Vogue: World is not just for show, but actively supports the film and fashion community.

The moral of the story is that costuming brings the viewer into the world of the film, completing the experience and leaving a silent, but no less impactful, mark on that person. Poor costuming can make a film unbelievable and unsatisfying, like watching a movie with a poor script or a glitchy green screen.
